Major metacestodes in small ruminants slaughtered at Dessie municipal abattoir, Eastern Ethiopia: prevalence, cyst viability, organ distribution and economic implications

Abstract: Present study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence, cyst viability, organ distribution and economic importance of major metacestodes in sheep and goats at Dessie municipal abattoir during the period between November 2011 and March 2012. Visceral organs in 930 slaughtered small ruminants (510 sheep and 420 goats) were examined during the study period, and economic losses were estimated based on the condemnation of organs infested by metacestodes. Out of 510 randomly selected slaughtered sheep, 45.69, 8.43 … Show more

“…The difference between the infection rate of omentum and other organs was very highly significantly associated (P<0.0001). This is in agreement with Gessese et al (2015), Abu-Elwafa and Al-Araby (2008), Radfar et al (2005), Wondimu et al (2011), Biu andMurtala (2012), Omar et al (2016), Abdulatif et al (2015), Fahmi (2014). While Mirzaei and Rezaei (2015) found that the liver wasthe highest infection rate for C.tenuicollis in slaughtered sheep and goats (1.64%) and (2%), respectively.…”

“…Cysticercus tenuicollis and hydatid cyst are larval stages of the canine tapeworm Taenia hydatigena and Echinococcus granulosus , respectively. The two cestodes are found in a large number of hosts throughout the world [ 2 - 5 ]. The cystic echinococcosis (also called hydatidosis) and T. hydatigena cysticercosis (due to C. tenuicollis) are widespread parasitic diseases infecting a large number of wild and domestic animals and humans and are considered as one of the major causes of economic losses and productivity of livestock in both the developing and industrialized world [ 6 - 8 ].…”
