Background and Objective: The G 0 ʻMedianʼ potato was designed to adapt in medium-altitude land and to produce seed tuber instead of food material. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and production of G 0 ʻMedianʼ potato under different media composition and fertilizer application methods in medium-altitude land. Materials and Methods: Two weeks old post acclimatization plantlet of G 0 ʻMedianʼ potato was prepared as plant material and then arranged in a split-plot design with two factors (growing media and chemical fertilizer application method) and three replications. Results: The result showed that the less proportion of soil in growing media could improve the field capacity, porosity, air space and water holding capacity, resulting in more loose structures suitable for potatoes (GM 1 >GM 2 >GM 3 ). The interaction of GM 1 +F 2 produced the significantly heaviest plant biomass (dry weight of plant and root). However, the best treatment was GM 2 +F 2 with the highest number of tuber per plant, i.e., 6 tuber per plant. Conclusion: High frequency (10x) of diluted granular fertilizer by using watering method (F 2 ) was suitable to improve not only the number of stolon and tuber but also the quality of harvested tuber as indicated by the lower percentage of small seed tuber.

Distinctive Bacteria Consortium of Rhizosphere and Surface Soil from Semi-Organic Potato Cultivation in Magelang, Indonesia

Potato cultivation in the middle land is an alternative solution to avoid pathogens. Although it reduces potato quantity and requires more chemical fertilizers to increase production that potentially damages the environment. Therefore, this study aims to characterize contaminations and indigenous microbes from semi-organic potato cultivation centers in Central Java. Soil samples from the semi-organic potato cultivation center of Kledung, Central, were analyzed for metal contamination using the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method and metagenomic soil bacterial diversity profiles. Specifically targeted genes of distinct regions 16SV3-V5. OTUs were identified using Uparse v7.0.1001, while Beta diversity analysis used UniFrac. All these indices in our samples were calculated with QIIME (Version 1.7.0) and displayed with R software (Version 2.15.3). The results showed that semi-organic cultivations had been polluted with Pb > Cd > Cr > As, and carbamate residue was detected in the rhizosphere and surface soil. Manure and compost application alongside NPK fertilizer increases N input, decreasing surface soil bacteria. The surface soil (with a depth of ≤ 5 cm) has a lower index of species richness, diversity, and relative abundance than the rhizosphere layer (depth > 5 cm). Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacterium dominate soil-level bacteria. In comparison, the rhizosphere soil has a higher bacteria diversity dominated by N-tethering rhizobia from the phylum Proteobacteria. The potato root attracts rhizobacteria consortium that support plant growth. A further study should be conducted to describe how the bacterial consortium formed, rhizobia migration from surface to rhizosphere soil, and its interaction with the potato plants. What Drives Climate Change Adaptation Practices in Smallholder Farmers? Evidence from Potato Farmers in Indonesia

The potato is the third most consumed crop globally after rice and wheat, but climate change has often disrupted its production. Therefore, adaptation practices are needed to maintain potato productivity. This study investigates the determinants of on- and off-farm climate change adaptation practices among smallholder farmers in Indonesia, considering adaptation intensity, which has not discussed in previous literature. The cross-sectional data were collected from 302 smallholder potato farmers in East Java, Indonesia, analyzed by a multivariate probit model to estimate the determinants. An ordered probit model was subsequently employed to understand the intensity factors. The findings indicated that the significant factors that affect farmers’ choice of on-farm adaptations were the farmers’ education, their participation in farmers’ groups, agricultural-related infrastructure, and agriculture output prices. Meanwhile, the off-farm adaptations were significantly affected by the farmers’ education, employed family members, agriculture-related infrastructure, and livestock ownership. The ordered probit model also suggested that participation in farmers groups and agricultural-related infrastructure were the most significant factors that encouraged adaptation. Therefore, adaptation planning should consider these factors to optimally improve farmers’ adaptation capacity.
