Intercropping maize (Zea mays L.) with cover crops (Crotalaria spectabilis and Urochloa ruziziensis) is a sustainable cultivation strategy that can generate ecological benefits combined with grain yield (GY). However, cover crops may require nitrogen (N) fertilization management to be adjusted to obtain a high GY in intercropping systems. This study was carried out over 2 years in southeastern Brazil using randomized complete block design in a split-plot scheme. The plots were composed of three cropping systems: sole maize, maize + U. ruziziensis and maize + C. spectabilis. The subplots consisted of four N levels: 0, 70, 140 and 210 kg/ha. The GY of the maize + U. ruziziensis may be reduced by 13% compared to the sole maize. The GY of the sole maize increased up to 11.3 Mg/ha for 95 kg/ha of N in the first year and 6.7 Mg/ha for 169 kg/ha of N in the second year. The GY of the maize + U. ruziziensis intercropping system showed linear increments of 120 kg/ha for every 10 kg/ha of N applied. In the maize + C. spectabilis intercropping, GY increased up to 9.8 Mg/ha for 201 kg/ha of N in the first year, without any variation during the second year. The land equivalent ratio (LER) of intercropping was increased by more than 35% compared to that of sole maize, and N fertilization increased the LER of the sole maize and maize + U. ruziziensis intercropping. Maize intercropping had higher LER values with greater demand for nitrogen to obtain similar yields compared to sole maize cropping.

La competencia entre el cultivo de importancia económica y las malezas es una limitante para maximizar el rendimiento de los cultivos por lo que la asociación es una técnica que busca minimizar el desarrollo de las malezas siendo amigable con el medio ambiente. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la disminución en la ocurrencia de malezas en el cultivo de maíz asociando con Urochloa ruziziensis. El diseño de tratamientos que se utilizó fue Factorial (2x2) dispuestos en un diseño completos al azar, siendo el factor A Cultivares y el factor B Asociación con Urochloa ruziziensis, con 4 tratamientos y 6 repeticiones totalizando 24 unidades experimentales (UE). Las determinaciones evaluadas fueron Masa verde de malezas a los 30, 50 y 70 días después de la siembra del maíz (Mg Ha-1), Longitud (cm) y diámetro (mm) de mazorca y Rendimiento del maíz (Mg Ha-1). Los datos obtenidos de la parcela experimental y para cada tratamiento fueron evaluados estadísticamente, para el efecto se recurrió al análisis de varianza (Test F 5%), que arrojaron las siguientes conclusiones la competencia que ocurre entre el maíz y las malezas por nutrientes, disponibilidad de agua y fotosíntesis durante el crecimiento vegetativo y reproductivo del maíz influyó considerablemente en el aumento de la productividad del mismo, así también en los parámetros de longitud y diámetro de la mazorca.

Depending on the climate and soil conditions and management, the intercropping of maize with soil cover plants may reduce the cereal agronomic performance. This study aimed to assess the effects of intercropping with Urochloa ruziziensis and Crotalaria spectabilis on the maize agronomic performance and the straw production and quality after the harvest. Three treatments (single maize and maize intercropped with U. ruziziensis and with C. spectabilis) were distributed into a randomized blocks design. The growth and production components and the maize grain yield were evaluated in the three systems, as well as the straw production and nitrogen accumulation in each system. The intercropping systems did not decrease the maize yield and agronomic performance, if compared to the single crop, regardless of the evaluated species. The intercropping with C. spectabilis and U. ruziziensis presented a straw production 24 and 11 % higher, respectively, and the intercropping with C. spectabilis resulted in a straw nitrogen accumulation 39 % higher, when compared to the single maize crop.
