Productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) as affected by nitrogen application levels and timing were studied. The experimental design was a three-replication randomized complete block design (RCBD). The first factor was nitrogen levels (122, 240, 288 and 336 kg N/ha) and the second factor was nitrogen timing (50% of N at sowing and 50% of N before the first irrigation; T1, 50% of N at sowing and 50% of N before the second irrigation; T2 and 50% of N before the first irrigation and 50% of N before the second irrigation; T3). Results indicated that plant height, ear length, kernel weight, number of grains/rows, number of grains/ear and grain yields all increased significantly as nitrogen levels increased and the level of 336 kg N/ha significantly exhibiting the highest values in both seasons. In terms of nitrogen application time, maize yield parameters such as plant height, ear length, kernel weight/ear, number of grains/rows, number of grains/ear and grain yield were significantly affected by nitrogen timing, with the highest values obtained at T3 while the lowest values obtained at T1 in both seasons. The interaction had a significant impact on plant height and grain yield/ha, with the tallest plants, the highest yields and its components observed at 336 kg N/ha, with 50% of N applied during the first irrigation and 50% of N applied during the second. Furthermore, under the study conditions, NUE decreased dramatically as nitrogen levels increased and increased significantly as nitrogen application time changed.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a widely cultivated monoecious plant, making it vulnerable to seedling soft rot, a significant disease that results in substantial global losses. During the 2020–2021, various regions of Iran reported a series of symptoms, which included seedling stunting, the browning, and rotting of roots and crowns, and post‐emergence dieback. To identify the causal agent of this disease, a total number of 70 symptomatic samples were collected, yielding 117 bacterial strains. These bacterial isolates exhibited small, circular, raised colonies with a yellow pigment on yeast‐extract peptone glucose agar (YPGA) medium, 48 h post inoculation (hpi). Identification of the putative pathogen as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (formerly known as Xanthomonas maltophilia) was based on colony morphology, biochemical features, amplification of the species‐specific SmeT gene and nucleotide sequences of the gyrB gene. Koch's postulates were completed by inoculating maize seedlings with bacterial suspensions (107 CFU/mL). Two weeks after inoculation, symptoms including decay in the lower part of the seedling, wilting and yellowing of leaves became apparent. Subsequently, the bacteria with typical colony morphology were re‐isolated from the crowns of the inoculated maize seedlings and identified as S. maltophilia. In addition, various plant species were tested to determine the host range of S. maltopilia. Sugarcane and sorghum exhibited complete collapse, while onion showed no symptoms. Other hosts displayed varying degrees of symptom severity. This study marks the first documented case of maize seedling rot caused by S. maltophilia. These findings offer valuable insights into the pathogenicity of the disease and its management implications.

Background. The experiment was undertaken at Nsapor, a suburb of Berekum municipality in the Bono Region of Ghana, from March 2019 to November 2019 to determine the suitable rate of fertilizer nitrogen application to optimize seed yield and yield attributes of Pannar 12 and Omankwa maize varieties in a semi deciduous agroecology of Ghana. Soil fertility is low in Ghana because of factors such as rampant annual bushfires, short fallow periods as a result of high human populations, continuous cropping, deforestation, and improper mining activities. There is also little information on crop variety and site-specific fertilizer recommendations in Ghana, resulting in inappropriate use of fertilizers by most Ghanaian farmers, culminating in low crop yields. Methods. Hybrid (Pannar 12) and open pollinated (Omankwa) maize varieties were treated with four rates of fertilizer nitrogen obtained from NPK 15-15-15 (0 kgN/ha, 90 kgN/ha, 120 kgN/ha and 150 kgN/ha) and laid out in a factorial combination in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Results. Application of 150 kg/ha of fertilizer N to Pannar 12 variety resulted in grain yields of 6146 kg/ha and 6095 kg/ha in the major and minor rainy seasons, respectively. The results also showed that application of 120 kg/ha of fertilizer N to Omankwa variety gave grain yields of 4635 kg/ha and 5286 kg/ha in the major and minor rainy seasons, respectively. To optimize the grain yield of maize, farmers could use NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer as a source of nitrogen and apply 120 kgN/ha to Omankwa variety and 150 kgN/ha to Pannar 12 variety in both major and minor rainy seasons.
