Chloroplast genomes are considered to be highly conserved. Nevertheless, differences in their sequences are an important source of phylogenetically informative data. Chloroplast genomes are increasingly applied in evolutionary studies of angiosperms, including Magnoliaceae. Recent studies have focused on resolving the previously debated classification of the family using a phylogenomic approach and chloroplast genome data. However, most Neotropical clades and recently described species have not yet been included in molecular studies. We performed sequencing, assembly, and annotation of 15 chloroplast genomes from Neotropical Magnoliaceae species. We compared the newly assembled chloroplast genomes with 22 chloroplast genomes from across the family, including representatives from each genus and section. Family-wide, the chloroplast genomes presented a length of about 160 kb. The gene content in all species was constant, with 145 genes. The intergenic regions showed a higher level of nucleotide diversity than the coding regions. Differences were higher among genera than within genera. The phylogenetic analysis in Magnolia showed two main clades and corroborated that the current infrageneric classification does not represent natural groups. Although chloroplast genomes are highly conserved in Magnoliaceae, the high level of diversity of the intergenic regions still resulted in an important source of phylogenetically informative data, even for closely related taxa.

The new occurrences of nine species of Orchidaceae belonging to six genera: Acianthera Scheidw. (2 spp.), Bifrenaria Lindl. (1 sp.), Grandiphyllum Docha Neto (1 sp.), Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. (2 spp.), Pabstiella Brieger & Senghas (2 spp.) and Saundersia Rchb. f. (1 sp.) are documented here for the first time in Poções, Bahia State, extending their distribution to Northeast of Brazil. Of the nine species presented here, six are endangered. Diagnostic morphological characters of the species are briefly described. These new records highlight the importance of studies in under-sampled areas.

Magnolia pajarito, a new species from the Andean slopes of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, is described and illustrated, and its morphological relationships with other similar Magnolia species are discussed. This new species is a tree between 9 and 30 m tall from montane forest remnants and pasture lands with dispersal trees (1500–1700 m), and it does not appear to be closely allied to any particular Magnolia species. This new species shares several features with four other species (M. arcabucoana, M. caricifragans, M. santanderiana, and M. virolinensis) in section Talauma. Morphologically it has some similarity to M. arcabucoana, but it differs in the length of the adaxial scar of the petiole, the size and shape of the leaf blade, the sepal and inner petal, and in the number of secondary veins, vaginal hypsophyl, and stamens. Additionally, habitat information, a distribution map, and data on Magnolia conservation status are included. An identification key of species of Magnolia found in Colombia is also provided. This new species elevates to 40 the number of Magnolia taxa for the flora of Colombia, of which 31 are endemic. Colombia has the highest diversity of the genus in the neotropics.
