Magnetization Reversal in Micron-Sized Magnetic Thin Films

Abstract: We have measured and simulated the dynamics of magnetization reversal in 5 nm by 0.8 by 1.6 mm Ni 60 Fe 40 thin films. The films measured form the upper electrode of a spin-polarized tunnel junction so that the magnetization direction of the film can be probed by measuring the tunneling resistance of the junction. When a magnetic field pulse is applied, the time to switch the film magnetization changes from greater than 10 ns to less than 500 ps as the pulse amplitude is increased from the coercive field to 10… Show more

“…The series begins with Al 14 I 3 -, in which the Al 14 core behaves as a dication, and from our theoretical investigations we describe the mechanism by which larger members of the series build upon this core. The synthetic importance of these gas phase findings are underscored by recent results that show that the solution phase Bmetalloid[ cluster compounds (25,26) synthesized by SchnPckel and co-workers are in fact, at their core, the same cluster species found in the gas phase (27,28).…”

“…In Fig. 3D, we summarize the results for several values of I in terms of the effective damping parameter a ¶ 0 2/(t d gm 0 M S ) (27), where g is the gyromagnetic ratio, m 0 is the magnetic permeability of free space, M S is the freelayer magnetization, and m 0 M S 0 0.81 T as measured by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry for a 4-nm Py film. The damping exhibits an approximately linear decrease with increasing I, extrapolating to zero near I D , in excellent agreement with the prediction of the spintorque model (1,18).…”

“…also allows to find parameters for optimal switching efficiency. Switching is obtained by pulses of T pulse = 140 ps and only 15 pJ energy (arrow) proving high efficiency when compared to conventional easy axis switching schemes (20,21). …”

“…This is demanding due to the longrange nature of dipolar interactions, and to the necessity of resolving several small length-scales simultaneously. Numerical simulation is surely the right tool for the quantitative study of hysteresis and dynamic switching (Koch et al 1998;Lu et al 1999). However, it is natural to seek a more analytical understanding of the equilibrium configurations.…”
