“…One instance could be the more effective delivery of inhaled drugs to the lung airway; e.g., an asthma inhaler or dry powder insulin inhaler. A second possibility is to help design synthetic cilia or cilia mimetics for patients with impaired lung cilia, such as magnetically or acoustically actuated cilia [102,103,104]. Synthetic molecular motors [105,106] have become available, which transfer chemical energy to motion at the nanoscale.…”

“…In the absence of dipole interaction, the rotational velocity is determined purely by the torque from the external field T ext . The rotational velocity is therefore simply oðtÞ ¼ mB 8pZa 3 sinðyðtÞ À fðtÞÞ (14) and the time evolution of the phase difference…”

“…For 1/(t r f) o 2p, however, there is no solution with _ Da0: the rotor does not reach a constant velocity but periodically slips to move backwards as it fails to keep up with the external field. 2,14,28 3.2 3 Â 3 array Fig. 2(a) is a phase diagram showing the dynamical configurations of 3 Â 3 arrays of magnetic rotors (see also Movie S1, ESI †).…”

“…Magnetic driving is convenient, and in recent years there have been several suggestions for ways to use magnetic colloids in microfluidic applications. These include swimmers 16 , pumps 710 , cilia 1115 , and for particle sorting and segregation 1619 . For reviews see refs.…”
