“…Additional XRMS measurements with applied magnetic field H k a and a perpendicular to the scattering plane were performed at the XmaS beam line at the ESRF, Grenoble. Our single crystal neutron diffraction experiments below T Mn N largely confirm previous measurements [2,18,19]. We find a set of magnetic satellites in Brillouin zones (hkl) with extinction conditions h k even, l odd that arise exclusively from the ordering of Mn spins.…”

“…Assuming theoretical 9 µ B /Tb 3+ , that would correspond to 36 • canting to a-axis in good agreement with reported data on Tbanisotropy. 28,29 Much less pronounced second transition corresponds to the flop of the electric polarization from P c to P a that is presumably caused by the flop of Mn cycloidal plane. 5,30 Both meta-magnetic transitions are observed in x = 4% and x = 10% samples.…”

“…Below TN2 = ~27 K, the spins in the bc-plane order into a spin cycloid creating a spontaneous ferroelectric polarization directed along the c axis. At temperatures below 27 K the magnetic-ordering wavevector locks in at q = 0.287 [3,7].…”

“…One of these derivatives, TbMnO3, exhibits multiferroicity below 27 K [2], and serves as a prototypical example of chiral spin order. The nature of the long range spin-cycloid ordering under equilibrium conditions has been studied and clarified using both neutron scattering [3][4][5][6] and resonant x-ray diffraction [7][8][9]. In the latter technique, soft X-rays tuned to the Mn L2 edge at 652 eV show a strong resonant enhancement giving direct information about the long-range spin order.…”
