Magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of Fournier's gangrene

Abstract: Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound are the imaging modalities recommended in the early diagnosis of Fournier's gangrene. Because of the high mortality of this inflammatory disease early diagnosis is essential to initiate adequate surgical and medical treatment. In the clinical literature only a handful of cases, in which diagnosis of Fournier's gangrene is based on MRI findings, have been reported; therefore, we report another case which shows the ability of MRI especially to determine the point of orig… Show more

“…It might extend rapidly along the Buck's fascia of the penis, dartos fascia of the scrotum, Colles' fascia of the perineum, and Scarpa's fascia of the anterior abdominal wall. Air localized in the subcutaneous tissues, marked thickening of the scrotal skin and fl uid accumulation could be identifi ed on US, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [8,9] . US, CT and MRI are helpful in the early diagnosis of FG.…”

“…US, CT and MRI are helpful in the early diagnosis of FG. Kickuth et al [8] described that a combination of both US and MRI examinations benefi ted the early diagnosis of FG. However, CT and MRI are the most valuable tools in determining the cause and defi ning the extent of spread of FG prior to surgical excision and drainage [8,9] .…”

“…Modern imaging techniques allow delineating the anatomy, to evaluate the extent of infection, and to detect eventual additional complications [21][22][23][24]. In most reports, US, CT and MRI were highly accurate for all these parameters.…”

“…CT and MRI are also useful in the early diagnosis of FG aiming the presence of gas in the subcutaneous tissue, thickening of the scrotal wall and indemnity of testes and epididymides. These techniques can also report on the cause and are useful for delineating the extent of the process [10][11][12].…”
