Magnetic resonance abnormalities associated with cognitive dysfunction in primary Sjögren Syndrome

Abstract: Patients with primary SS have morphological abnormalities that are related to neuropsychological and psychiatric disturbances. These findings provide some support for the organic etiology of cognitive and psychiatric dysfunction and thus for central nervous system involvement in SS.

“…As Table 2 shows in items 2,4,5 and 6 of RAVLT test the difference between controls and PSS patients was close to the significance level (borderline). We believe that a larger sample could help understand the difference between the performance of PSS and healthy controls in other parts of the test; thus, confirming that PSS Brazilian patients show critical memory impairment, as presented in other studies 22,18,23 .…”

“…Among the studies that have used neuropsychological tests, Mataró et al 18 , Martinez et al 7 , and Segal et al 19 used extensive batteries composed of approximately nine neuropsychological tests. The present study followed the design of Martinez et al 7 , with slight modifications, such as a reduction of the number of tests.…”

“…SWL of the brain is apparently related to CNS SS, especially in patients with psychiatric or cognitive abnormalities [10,11,26], and small vessel disease with inflammation is regarded as the cause of these lesions [25,27]. In addition, AH is correlated to CNS SS [11] and this change is so sensitive that even SS patients without any MRI lesion would show the brain lesions [28].…”

“…Prospective data regarding cognitive disorders in SS is limited 9,10,11,12,13,14 . A validated screening questionnaire could be a useful adjunct to formal neuropsychometric testing; however, the relationship between subjective memory complaints and cognitive impairment is inconsistent.…”
