Magnetic properties of uniform spherical magnetite particles prepared from ferrous hydroxide gels

Abstract: a), S. ARAJS (a), and E. MATIJEVI~ (b) Nearly spherical magnetite (Fe,O,) particles of narrow size distribution are prepared by aging ferrous hydroxide gels a t 363 K for selected time periods. The static magnetic properties of these particles, ranging in diameter between 0.3 and 1.2 pm, are studied at 300 K by means of a vibrating sample mzgnetometer in applied magnetic fields up to 7000 Oe. The results are compared with dats and theoretical predictions of other investigators on Fe,O, particles prepared by… Show more

“…Size dispersions (_+ l rr) were _+78, _+112, and _+185 nm for samples A1, A2, and A3, respectively. The grain-size dependent hysteresis parameters He and Mrs/M s (Mrs is saturation IRM) measured at RT were similar to those of hydrothermally precipitated [Dunlop, 1986], grown [Amin et al, 1987] or recrystallized [Heider et al, 1987] magnetites of similar size [see Argyle and Dunlop, 1990, Figures 3 and 4].…”

“…Comparison of calculated M rs / M s for randomly oriented assemblages (solid circles) and experimental data on sized synthetic magnetites (open symbols) [ Levi and Merrill , 1978; Dunlop , 1986; Amin et al , 1987; Argyle and Dunlop , 1990]. The expected value of M rs / M s (0.866) for a single‐domain magnetite governed by magnetocrystalline anisotropy is shown by a horizontal line.…”

“…Reduced saturation remanences Mrs/M s measured for our magnetites and in previous studies [Levi and Merrill, 1978; Ozdemir and Banerjee, 1982;Dunlop, 1986a;Amin et al, 1987] are compared in Figure 15 with grain-size dependences predicted by various domain structure models. Lamellar two-domain (2D) structures in cubes [Argyle and Dunlop, 1984] and spheres [Veitch 1984] owe their remanences to the moment of the domain wall.…”
