“…Complete exclusion of air insufflation, removal of residual colonic air and feces, and suction of infused water predominantly during insertion to assist identification of the lumen while minimizing distension are characteristic features of water exchange [3,10]. Water exchange minimizes loop formation [20] and decreases discomfort [3]. By providing salvage cleansing during insertion [16,19,21], water exchange also allows the colonoscopist to devote a greater proportion of the withdrawal time to inspection [10].…”

“…The gravitational effect of water can reduce angulation particularly at the rectosigmoid and sigmoid-descending junction and shortens colon when compared with gas insufflation (figure 2). Benefits include reduced loop formation,15 a reduced need to change position on insertion and increased patient comfort 16 17. Exchanging water on insertion also improves views and reduces the need to clean on withdrawal.…”

“…In order to facilitate a structured approach to spatial inconsistencies during colonoscopies, magnetic endoscopic imaging (MEI) devices that show colonoscopic configuration in three dimensions have been developed. It has previously been demonstrated that, in particular, looping of the scope and attempts at straightening the scope are associated with severe pain during colonoscopy [3,4], potentially affecting completion rates and patients' willingness to repeat the procedure. The adjuvant use of MEI can help the colonoscopist in making preemptive adjustments of the colonoscope in order to prevent looping, thereby potentially decreasing pain scores and increasing cecal intubation rates.…”
