Magnetic Cell–Scaffold Interface Constructed by Superparamagnetic IONP Enhanced Osteogenesis of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

Abstract: One of the key factors in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is to optimize the interaction between seed cells and scaffolds such that the cells can grow in naturally biomimetic conditions. Their similarity to macromolecules and many unique properties mean that functional nanoparticles have promising potential for the modification and improvement of traditional scaffolds to obtain excellent biocompatibility, tunable stiffness, physical sensing, and stimulus-response capabilities. In the present study… Show more

“…In order to confirm the role of the magnetic properties of the NPs, Chen et al. have prepared composite PLGA‐PCL fibrous scaffold with two types of NPs at their surface, by post‐electrospinning layer‐by‐layer coatings of IO NPs or gold NPs . Both NP coatings increased the hydrophilicity of the fibers and the elastic modulus of the scaffolds, as well as its protein adsorption ability, which resulted in a better adhesion of adipose‐derived stem cells (ADSC).…”

“…IO-NPs were also incorporated into polymeric scaffolds which were fabricated via electrospinning [133], or via composite fabrication [134] and 3D printing [135,136]. Biocompatible polymers explored so far include PLA [137], poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PCL) [138], poly(urethane) [139], and chitosan [134]. A drawback for polymer-based scaffolds is their low mechanical strength.…”

“…Effects on the cell activities: The effect of GNPs on cell differentiation and maturation has been highlighted in another study. It has been observed that the cells developed longer neuronal outgrowth in the presence of GNPs [57,58]. Other effects: The exposure of the cell to NPs brings about harmful effects such as damage mitochondrial function, inflammation, the formation of apoptotic bodies, membrane leakage of lactate dehydrogenase, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, increase in micronuclei, and chromosome condensation [49].…”
