“…For example, Barradas et al found that 7.8 mM Ca 2þ ions in culture medium could enhance the proliferation and expression of osteogenic genes in hMSCs [29]. Shimaya et al also demonstrated that 5e10 mM Mg 2þ ions in culture medium could enhance the adhesion and ensuing differentiation of synovial mesenchymal stem cells [34]. Inconsistent with these previous reports, in this study, calcium and magnesium ions of different concentration in the range of that in MCPCs conditioned culture medium showed only slight but not significant effect on the adhesion efficiency and the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, no matter when cultured on culture plate or on CPC.…”

“…Particles of ferucarbotran were observed around the lesions and anterior synovium 2 weeks after transplantation. We previously reported that more than 60% of synovial MSCs suspended in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) placed upon an osteochondral defect adhered to the defect in 10 min 38 and ultimately promoted cartilage regeneration 23 and the addition of magnesium in the cell suspension enhanced this adherence through the activation of integrins 39 . In this study we suspended Table 3).…”

“…For microscopy, the pellets were embedded in paraffin, cut into 5 mm sections, and stained with toluidine blue. 13 For adipogenesis, cells were cultured in adipogenic medium which consisted of complete medium supplemented with 100 nM dexamethasone (Sigma-Aldrich Corp.), 0.5 mM isobutyl-methylxanthine (Sigma-Aldrich Corp.), and 50 mM indomethacin (Wako) for 21 days. The adipogenic cultures were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and then stained with fresh oil red-O solution.…”
