Mafic Plinian eruptions: Is fast ascent required?

Abstract: It has been hypothesized that for a Plinian eruption of mafic magma to occur, that magma must ascend rapidly from the chamber to cause it to fragment into a jet containing juvenile and nonjuvenile tephra. To determine how fast mafic Plinian magmas need to travel to the level of fragmentation, a number of decompression experiments were carried out on two hydrous mafic magmas, and the results are compared to the products of two well‐documented mafic Plinian eruptions: the basaltic andesite Fontana eruption of Ma… Show more

“…1b) is observed to occur in ~180 s during our 4D experiments. These distinctive textures are also reported in products of the Fontana Lapilli (Nicaragua) [8][9][10] and 1886 Tarawera (New Zealand) eruptions 4,6,7 . Therefore, all the studied examples of basaltic Plinian deposits show features that are consistent with the textures produced in our experiments.…”
