Macular and retinal nerve fiber thickness in recovered and persistent amblyopia

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of increased macular or retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) in amblyopic eyes, find if the increased macular or RNFLT is related to the lack of response in amblyopic eyes, and to explore whether the increased central macular thickness (CMT) in amblyopic eyes is purely related to the hyperopia. This is a prospective descriptive study. CMT and peripapillary RNFLT were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography to evaluate 60 patients wit… Show more

“…There was a significant increase in the macular thickness and macular volume in all amblyopic eyes comparing to the other fellow eyes. This corroborated with the previous studies, 9 , 12 while other researchers reported no significant variations in the macular thickness 10 , 30 , 31 or RNFLT 10 , 11 , 30 , 31 in amblyopic eyes.…”

“…On the other hand, in the study comparing the axial length and macular thickness in children with anisometropic amblyopia, strabismic amblyopia and healthy children, Kok et al found no difference in the macular thickness of the three groups despite the fact that the axial lengths of the amblyopic and fellow eyes were significantly shorter compared to the control group and stated that the correlation between the axial length and macular thickness in healthy people was not present in the amblyopic and fellow eyes 36 . Yassin et al found no significant differences in the RNFL thicknesses of the persistent and recovered children with amblyopia, stating that the refractive error had no relationship with the macular and RNFL thickness 37 . There are other studies indicating that there is no significant correlation between the RNFL thickness and axial length in amblyopia groups 27,38 .…”

“…Unlike the macular vessel system, our data showed unchanged mean macular thickness in unilateral anisometropic amblyopes and in successfully treated anisometropic amblyopic children after adjustment for the AL. Many studies using OCT have examined retinal thickness of amblyopia and evaluated the reversal of difference after treatment with varied methodologies [33][34][35][36][37] . It is reported studies that showed difference in retinal thicknesses tend to show increased thickness associated with amblyopia.…”
