Effect of amblyopia treatment on macular microvasculature in children with anisometropic amblyopia using optical coherence tomographic angiography

Abstract: To measure the retinal microvascular density in patients with anisometropic amblyopia using optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) and to evaluate the effects of successful amblyopia treatment on microvasculature in retina. 59 children (5–12 years old) including 22 newly diagnosed unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, 16 recovered unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, and 21 control children were imaged with OCTA using 6 × 6-mm macular scan pattern. Vessel densities of the superficial capillary plexus (S… Show more

“…(5,9,10,(14)(15)(16) Regarding macular VD, mixing results have been reported. The studies performed by Sobral et al (10), Zhang et al (17), Yilmaz et al (5) and longgi et al( 9) demonstrated lower macular VD in eyes with amblyopia. However, consistent with our results, Araki et al (14) and Demiyarak et al (18) found no differences regarding VD between amblyopic eyes and healthy controls.…”

“…Some studies report that several retinal microvasculature metrics, including FAZ circularity and VDI, are associated with reduced visual acuity in amblyopic eyes. Zhang and colleauges 9 compared the retinal vessel density in newly diagnosed unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, recovered unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, and control children. They found that children with anisometropic amblyopia showed a reduced macular vessel density compared with controls.…”

“…One study had the conclusion that amblyopic eye retinal vessel density (RVD) potentially increased after amblyopia treatment in specific regions of the retina ( 19 ). Another study indicated that anisometropic amblyopic eyes with lower macular vessel density could recover to the level of healthy eyes after full correction of the refractive errors and patching ( 20 ). The change of blood flow density in amblyopia before and after treatment is our next research goal.…”
