Macrodebris and microplastics pollution in Nigeria: first report on abundance, distribution and composition

Abstract: The abundance, distribution and composition of marine debris (> 5 cm) and small microplastics (11 μm) from five rivers in South Eastern Nigeria was investigated. This study provided the first assessment of the type and quantity of marine litter and microplastics in Nigeria. A total of 3,487 macrodebris items/m 2 were counted with the following distribution: plastics (59%), metal (10%), cloth (7%), paper/cardboard (7%), rubber (7%), glass/ceramics (5%), medical and agro-based waste (3%), and wood (2%). The clea… Show more

“…Due to the transport and deposition of MaP in the floodplain area, it can be overlaid by further sedimentation events and thus found in deeper layers. Sampling at the banks of five different rivers in Nigeria has shown high levels of MaP contamination, with 3487 waste items/m 2 (>5 cm), 59% of which were MaP [133]. Along the Paranà River in Argentina, the average MaP abundance was 5.05 items/m 2 [134].…”

“…Plastic and solid wastes are dumped at illegal dumpsites, by the roadside or inside drainage channels (Adegboye 2018;Imam et al 2008) clogging gutters and littering streets following rainfalls, and swept into the marine ecosystems by floodwater (Dumbili & Henderson 2020). Microplastics, tiny particles under 5 mm in length (SAPEA, 2019) have been identified in rivers located in Eastern Nigeria (Ebere et al 2019) and Western Nigeria (Akindele, Ehlers & Koop 2019).…”
