Macrocyclic Restriction with Flexible Alkylene Linkers: A Simple Strategy to Control the Solid‐State Properties of π‐Conjugated Systems

“…For example, the largest change in the absorption maximum ( λ max ) was found for 4c , which showed a significant shift from 433 nm in CH 2 Cl 2 to 505 nm in the solid state. Such phenomenon has been previously attributed to an increase in exciton coupling 14…”

“…Such phenomenon has been previously attributed to an increase in exciton coupling. [14] To ascertain if similar beneficial self-organizing aggregates can be triggered in solution, we further carried out experiments with 4 d. For a solution of 4 d in tetrahydrofuran (THF), the PL spectra were obtained with an increasing concentration of deionized water as shown in Figure 4. A steady increase in the relative emission intensity was observed with increasing water concentration owing to the formation of partially soluble aggregates.…”

“…First, chemical engineering of the polymeric structures is a useful way to tune the molecular weight but at the same time add new properties to the polymers. For instance, side chain engineering can bestow solubility in organic solvents [211,212], regulate molecular packing [213,214], and modulate intermolecular interactions [215,216]. Second, polymers with both a similar molecular weight and a similar molecular structure, but with different lengths of side chains, present another way to tune the molecular stacking [217,218], thin film morphology [219,220], and charge transport [221,222].…”

“…6 Saito et al controlled the solid-state properties of π-conjugated systems by macrocyclic restriction with flexible alkylene linkers. 7 Gierschner et al and Park et al have investigated the effects of different packing motifs in single crystals of a series of distyrylbenzene derivatives on the photophysical and laser properties. 8 Among them, 9,10distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives have been studied extensively due to their excellent optical and electronic properties.…”
