Mercury (Hg) contamination has increased in the last decades, resulting in human consumption concerns mainly in developing countries. In this context, this study aimed to carry out a health risk assessment regarding the consumption of swimming crabs, shrimp and squid species caught in different regions of the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For this purpose, we used calculations that indicated the Estimated Monthly Intake (EMI), Maximum Monthly Intake Rate (IRmm) and Hazard Quotient (HQ). As the target population, the mean weight corresponding to men and women children aged 12 years, young people aged 24 years, and middle-aged people (adults) aged 54 years were used, taking into account the female and male gender. In the studied seafood, the EMI (0.0001 to 0.0006 mg.kg.month-1) was below the monthly intake limit and IRmm (10.3 to 34.8 kg month-1) indicates that large quantities of seafood can be consumed by the population studied, unless the safe limit of monthly intake of the contaminant is reached. The hazard quotient (0.4 to 1.4) indicate potential risks health of children eating swimming crabs and squid and young women eating swimming crabs. Our study also highlights the importance of risk assessments, as even when seafood contains Hg concentrations below established limits, consumption variables must be taken into account, so as not to underestimate the potential health risks.

Salah satu bentuk ekosistem air tawar yang merupakan habitat dari berbagai organisme adalah sungai. Sungai Mengaji merupakan sungai yang bersumber dari lereng selatan Gunung Slamet. Sungai selalu mengalami perubahan faktor fisika, kimia, dan biologi. Penurunan kualitas air sungai sangat berdampak terhadap distribusi dan sex ratio udang Macrobrachium pilimanus di Sungai Mengaji. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui distribusi dan sex ratio udang M. pilimanus di Sungai Mengaji. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode survai untuk penentuan stasiun dan purposive random sampling untuk pengambilan sampel. Sampel yang didapatkan kemudian diidentifikasi dan diukur menggunakan metode morfometri. Penelitian dilakukan antarabulan Juni-Agustus 2020. Data distribusi udang dianalisis menggunakan uji “F” dengan SPSS 2016, sedangkan sex ratio udang di analisis menggunakan rumus sex ratio dari metode Kao dan Liu. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa distribusi udang M. pilimanus di Sungai Mengaji Banyumas yaitu tidak merata antarstasiun. Distribusinya ditemukan paling tinggi pada Stasiun IV, sedangkan udang betinanya ditemukan paling tinggi pada Stasiun II. Perbandingan jenis kelamin atau sex ratio udang M. pilimanus di Sungai Mengaji Banyumas tidak seimbang dan didominasi oleh betina. Sex ratio-nya ditemukan paling tinggi pada pada Stasiun II.

Metals, many of which are potentially toxic, are present in the aquatic environment originated from both natural and anthropogenic sources. In these ecosystems, these elements are mostly deposited in the sediment, followed by water dissolution, potentially contaminating resident biota. Among several aquatic animals, crustaceans are considered excellent bioindicators, as they live in close contact with contaminated sediment. The accumulation of metal, whether they are classified as essential, when in excessive quantities or nonessential, not only cause damage to the health of these animals, but also to the man who consumes seafood. Among the main toxic elements to animal and human health are aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel and silver. In this context, this systematic review aimed to investigate the dynamics of these metals in water, the main bioaccumulative tissues in crustaceans, the effects of these contaminants on animal and human health, and the regulatory limits for these metals worldwide. A total of 91 articles were selected for this review, and an additional 68 articles not found in the three assessed databases were considered essential and included, totaling 159 articles published between 2010 and 2020. Our results indicate that both chemical speciation and abiotic factors such as pH, oxygen and salinity in aquatic environments affect element bioavailability, dynamics, and toxicity. Among crustaceans, crabs are considered the main bioindicator biological system, with the hepatopancreas appearing as the main bioaccumulator organ. Studies indicate that exposure to these elements may result in nervous, respiratory, and reproductive system effects in both animals and humans. Finally, many studies indicate that the concentrations of these elements in crustaceans intended for human consumption exceed limits established by international organizations, both with regard to seafood metal contents and well as daily, weekly, or monthly intake limits set for humans, indicating consumer health risks.
