Macro elements in the finite element analysis of multi-conductor eddy-current problems

Abstract: The use of macro elements which replace the multiconductor winding in the time-stepping finite element analysis of electrical machines is presented in the paper. The effect of eddycurrents in the windings is considered by a traditional finite element formulation combined with the so called elimination of inner nodes to achieve fast solution. The elimination method is incorporated into time stepping analysis in such a way that the creation of the numerical macro element is performed only once in a whole time st… Show more

“…The advancement compared to traditional sub-structuring in the elimination of inner nodes was that the eliminated region contained eddy-current carrying conductors which are equivalent to viscose damping in mechanics which is typically excluded from substructured regions. In [6,7] the eddy current carrying regions -multi-conductor windings in the slots of electrical machines -were magnetically linear and their elimination allowed for solving a non-linear magnetic iteration faster. In order to improve the computation performance the eliminated regions can be treated as macro elements.…”
