MA03.08 Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in the Diagnosis and Prognosis of Lung Cancer

Abstract: Conclusion:Pre-treatment HRQOL appears to be associated with postoperative complications in patients undergoing lung cancer resection. Pre-operative HRQOL assessments could be used to identify patients who are at higher risk for complications, thereby facilitating targeted interventions to improve perioperative outcomes. Specifically, interventions that target pain/discomfort pre-emptively may be beneficial. The effect of these interventions could be tracked by longitudinal HRQOL.

“…Fear related to contracting COVID-19, quarantining, and stay-at-home orders have caused patients to be more apprehensive to seek care for emergent issues [ 2 ]. This finding is further supported by the study conducted by Dr. Reyes and colleagues that found a 38% decrease in new lung cancer cases in 2020 compared to the pre-COVID-19 era [ 14 ]. According to Quebec Ministry of Health, about 4100 people may have gone undiagnosed with all cancer types during the pandemic.…”

“…Literature detailing the impact of COVID-19 on new cancer diagnoses and prognosis is emerging, with fewer LC cases diagnosed during the pandemic period compared to the prior year and an increase in symptomatic and severe cases of LC diagnosed during the pandemic period. 10,11 To date, no standard-of-care approach exists for treating patients with LC during the pandemic. Several organizations and groups of experts shared general recommendations for providers early in the pandemic.…”

“…Most centres had transitioned to either hybrid or fully virtual meetings, with only 12 sites continuing face-to-face meetings, some citing benefit and some drawback(s) with these approaches. This survey was not designed to investigate the impact in detail, although the free-text comments supported other recent reports that have demonstrated a decline in diagnostic procedures performed for lung cancer along with lower rates of diagnosis, reduction in clinical trial participation and increased 30-day mortality 14 29…”
