Lysine requirements of pigs from 2 to 7 kg live weight

Abstract: Thirty-two male pigs were used to investigate the effects of nine levels of dietary lysine ranging from 0-41 to 1-30 g lysine per MJ gross energy (GE) on the performance of pigs weaned at 1 to 2 days of age and growing between 2 and 7 kg live weight. The nine dietary lysine treatments, which contained similar levels of GE and balance of essential amino acids, were offered to the pigs at a common feeding level of 2-0 MJ GE per kg metabolic live weight (M 075 ) per day. Growth performance and protein deposition … Show more

“…Trindade Neto et al (2001) verified major efficiency of lysine utilization for muscle protein synthesis of piglets when total lysine level was elevated to 1.25%. These observations confirmed the results by Susenbeth (1995) and Auldist et al (1997) showing that an increase in dietary lysine levels stimulates the development of protein fractions or compartments of the body. However these authors did not determine an optimum dietary limit.…”

“…Percentages of water and fat components on the carcass were similar to those found by Auldist et al (1997) in a study with piglets at 7 kg of body weight and diets changing from 1.37 to 1.74% of lysine. Trindade Neto et al (2001) verified major efficiency of lysine utilization for muscle protein synthesis of piglets when total lysine level was elevated to 1.25%.…”

“…As daily milk yield is relatively constant during the 3rd and 4th weeks of lactation (Toner et al, 1995), milk yield estimated by the deuterium oxide procedure between day 24 and 28 of lactation should be representative of daily milk production between day 14 and 28. Where artificially reared piglets have been offered diets of similar energy and amino acid contents to those in sow milk, the food efficiency for pigs between 1 and 4 weeks of age is closer to 1-0 g milk dry matter: 1-0 g piglet growth (Hodge, 1974;Auldist et al, 1997). This value for the conversion efficiency of milk dry matter into piglet growth is greater than earlier estimates of 0-70, 0-86 and 0-82 calculated by Lewis et al (1978), van Kempen et al (1985) and Noblet and Etienne (1989) respectively for sucking piglets between 7 and 25 days of age.…”

“…Segundo Auldist et al (1997), o melhoramento gené-tico ocorrido nos últimos anos foi um dos fatores determinantes em mudanças significativas nas exigências de lisina para os suínos. Assim, esse trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de determinar a exigência nutricional de lisina para leitoas com alto potencial genético para deposição de carne magra na carcaça, dos 6 aos 16 kg.…”
