“…At the 22 % protein level a significant relationship was found only for the growth interval between 8 and 13-6 kg. Several authors have also reported no significant responses to graded additions of methionine to different dietary mixtures (Meade, 1956;Acker, Catron and Hays, 1959;Soldevila and Meade, 1964;Stockland, Meade and Nordstrom, 1971). The relationship at the 20% protein level for the 8 to 50 kg growth phase was only significant.…”

“…This might also explain the lack of significance in the response of methionine supple mentation, as has been previously reported Acker et al, 1959). …”

“…The experimental plan and analysis of variance are shown in Table 36. A surprisingly poor performance was recorded for the pigs fed the MHA-supplemented soybean meal diet. Methionine supplementation of soybean meal rations has been reported repeatedly to improve body gain and feed efficiency (Acker et al, 1959;Hays et al, 1959). The feed conversion values for the MHA-supplemented group, however, were quite good, which indicates that a palatability factor decreasing feed con sumption may be partially responsible for the poor performance.…”

“…Previous published data have shown that methionine addition to soybean protein has repeatedly improved body gain and feed efficiency (Acker et al, 1959;Hays et al, 1959). When methionine and valine were added to the basal ration, pig gains were depressed slightly as compared to pigs fed the basal ration.…”
