Lymphocyte Abnormalities in Myeloma

Abstract: Lymphopenia and monocytosis were found in one third of untreated myeloma patients but there was no correlation between the two. Half of the patients studied had an increase in medium basophilic lymphoid cells, and eight had a raised PAS score. Lymphocytes from the majority of untreated myeloma patients failed to respond to antigenic stimulation in vitro compared with age matched controls. Three patients were immunized but showed no increase in immunoblasts or rise in antibody titre. The findings strongly sugge… Show more

“…Our 4 patients with lambda light chains presented a high total number of monocytes. This may be coincidence only, but in a study by Sewel (21) monocytosis (defined as more than 800 x lob cells/ 1 blood) was found in 19 out of 62 patients with MM. Unfortunately, no information on the light chain type of the serum M-component was given for this material.…”

“…Lymphopenia was reported in one third of patients with multiple myeloma [23]. Since the majority of our patients have been treated with var ious chemotherapeutic agents, lymphopenia, which was seen in some of them, could not be meaningfully analyzed.…”

“…Therefore, different mechanisms for impaired antibody production probably coexist. Sewell (1977) has described monocytosis in the peripheral blood of patients with myelomatosis. Also increased monocyte function, as measured by phytohaemagglutinin-induced cytotoxicity to CRBC, has been rzported in this disease (Yonkosky, 1977).…”
