Lycopene is superior to moringa in improving fertility markers in diet-induced obesity male rats

Abstract: Highlights Obesity contributes to male infertility. Can lycopene or moringa improve male infertility? Tested in a rodent model of diet-induced obesity. Lycopene was superior to Moringa in improving male fertility parameters.

“…In this context, the natural or synthesized molecules with the potential to inhibit or reduce the production or interaction of AGEs and RAGEs have a great significance in current biomedical research. According to research reports, lycopene can reduce the production of AGE and RAGE, which aids in vessel protection [ 6 , 137 , 169 ]. The use of lycopene can promote the function of endothelial cells, as indicated by preclinical studies.…”

“…In a comparative study, Moringa and lycopene improved oxidative stress, and male fertility markers in HFD-fed animals, yet lycopene showed higher antiantioxidant effects. This concluded that lycopene had superior effect compared to moringa in improving the male fertility parameters with possible higher attenuation of oxidative stress (Greish et al 2021).…”

“…This concluded that lycopene had superior effect compared to moringa in improving the male fertility parameters with possible higher attenuation of oxidative stress (Greish et al. 2021). This improvement may be due to anti‐inflammatory activities and free radical scavenging, as well as regenerating endogenous antioxidant defence system mechanisms (Hussein et al., 2018).…”

“…In a human study, tomato soup consumption at 400 g/day significantly increased seminal plasma levels of lycopene, though the effects on plasma antioxidant levels failed to reach significance [ 352 ]. As potent antioxidants, the role of carotenoids in fertility has been extensively investigated [ 345 , 348 , 353 , 354 , 355 ]. Williams et al examined the effect of lactolycopene, a combination of lycopene with whey protein, which protects lycopene from digestion, on sperm quality in a randomised placebo-controlled trial [ 354 ].…”
