Lycopene Alleviates DSS-Induced Colitis and Behavioral Disorders via Mediating Microbes-Gut–Brain Axis Balance

Abstract: Gut microbes play significant roles in colitis development. The current study was aimed to uncover the preventive effects of lycopene (LYC), a functional carotenoid component, on colitis and the accompanied behavior disorders. The current study demonstrated that LYC treatment (50 mg/kg body weight/day) for 40 days prevented the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced gut barrier damages and inflammatory responses in male mice. LYC improved DSS-induced depression and anxiety-like behavioral disorders by suppressin… Show more

“…The integrity of the epithelial cells layer is essential for gut barrier function. Recently, LYC has appeared to be an essential functional nutrient for intestinal integrity [ 39 , 40 ]. In the present research, TEER in the jejunum was significantly reduced, while DAO content in the serum markedly increased after DON exposure.…”

“…Similarly, previously, LYC protected intestinal injury induced by sulfamethoxazole [ 35 ]. Another study demonstrated that LYC treatment prevented dextran sulfate sodium-induced gut barrier damages and inflammatory responses in male rats [ 40 ]. In the current research, the increased number of MUC2+ cells in the villi and LYZ+ cells in the crypt further indicate that the LYC can protect barrier function in the small intestinal mucosa.…”

“…Lycopene is a lipophilic carotenoid pigment that can diffuse into brain and has been used for the treatment of tumors and type 2 diabetes. It has shown significant antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects (Gencoglu et al, 2017;Zhao et al, 2020). Lycopene also prevents lipid peroxidation and accumulates hydrogen peroxide and superoxide in neurodegeneration studies (Park et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2017;Zhu et al, 2020).…”

“…Different colitis models represent the human behavioral phenotype. Zhao et al (2020) found that the depression and anxiety-like behavior in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis model could be improved by lycopene through increasing the relative abundance of Bi dobacterium and Lactobacillus. Similarly, Jang et al (2018) inoculated Lactobacillus johnsonii to 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced colitis model, which improved memory impairment by restoring the disturbed gut microbiota composition.…”
