For better or worse, it has become difficult to conduct research in the social sciences without encountering gender, even well beyond fields that specifically focus on it. Since the advent of gender studies as a discipline, the concept has gained momentum both as a social fact and structure of social action, and as the analytic category through which these are conceptualised. This special issue of the BMS is embedded in the idea that the analysis of gender itself is indissociable from the history of the concept, and that the increasing spread of this notion throughout society has an impact on the way(s) gender is investigated. In the space of just a few decades the world has evolved from one in which researchers were working to give consistency to a nameless force, to one which is now gender conscious, where gender is mobilised, criticised, claimed, resisted, and debated. In a gender conscious world, the rules of research are changing. The notion of gender consciousness that is proposed here borrows carefully from research in the sociology of law developed under the name legal consciousness studies (LCS). The fact that there are different definitions of gender that compete with each other does not prevent us from considering that there is gender, and we may even consider that the proliferation of definitions participates in the stability of the social phenomenon we are studying, just as, for the theorists of LCS, the multiple representations of the law contribute to its hegemony. One of the central issues here is the problematization of the dialectic between categories of practice and categories of analysis, with a focus on the methodological and epistemological questions of these studies. This ‘return to the field’ will provide answers to these questions, beginning with a personal summary overview of what feminist epistemologies (I) and feminist methodologies (II) have contributed to social sciences, before moving on to contemporary research questions that emerge through the prism of gender consciousness (III).

L’un des défis scientifiques dans les études des violences de genre reste le degré de prise en compte de l’intersectionnalité dans l’enquête par questionnaires et de ses données. Dans le cas de l’enquête Virage ( Violence et rapports de genre ) dans les Outre-mer (2018), la simple réplication ou le prolongement de l’enquête hexagonale du même nom (2015) à trois départements-régions supplémentaires n’est pas approprié pour adéquatement y décrire le phénomène des violences de genre. L’analyse critique de l’enquête « en train de se faire » propose des pistes de réflexion pour répondre à ce problème méthodologique et prendre en compte les rapports sociaux liés au genre et à la classe sociale, mais aussi ceux liés à la racialisation, et aux rapports entre « métropole » et territoires ultramarins – et ce, aux trois premiers stades de l’enquête : sa conception, sa mise en œuvre et son recueil de données.

Les Violences Basées sur le Genre (VBG) constituent une préoccupation majeure pour divers organismes en Côte d’ivoire. Elles ont essentiellement été abordées dans un but opérationnel en vue d’obtenir des changements rapides dans la société ivoirienne en ce qui concerne la condition féminine. Au niveau académique et particulièrement dans le monde du travail cependant, ces violences ont cependant reçu très peu d’attention. L’article tente, à partir d’une revue de littérature et d’une enquête de terrain réalisée à Abidjan et à Bouaké, de mettre au jour l’existence de Violences Basées sur le Genre dans le monde du travail. Les données nécessaires à l’analyse ont été collectées en auprès de 14 personnes, dont des responsables de Services Gouvernementaux, d’Organisation Non Gouvernemental, de syndicats, des travailleurs du secteur formel et informel. L’article arrive à la conclusion que les Violences Basées sur le Genre existent dans le monde du travail en Côte d’Ivoire et qu’elles constituent une reproduction des inégalités de genre dans le monde du travail. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a major concern for various organizations in Côte d'Ivoire. This topic is mainly mentioned for an operational purpose to obtain rapid changes in Ivorian society regarding the condition of women. At the academic level and particularly in the world of work, however, such violence has received very little attention. The article attempts, from a literature review and a field survey carried out in Abidjan and Bouaké, to bring to light the existence of Gender-Based Violence in the world of work. The data necessary for the analysis were quoted from 14 people, including officials of Government Services, Non-Governmental Organizations, trade unions, workers in the formal and informal sector. The article concludes that the Gender-Based Violence existing in the world of work in Côte d'Ivoire and that it constitutes a reproduction of gender inequalities in the world of work.
