Lung volumes related to physical activity, physical fitness, aerobic capacity and body mass index in students

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of this study was to estimate the correlation between the function parameters of the respiratory system and the amount of physical activity, body mass index and aerobic and physical fitness in Daugavpils University students. The study involved a group of 191 students of both sexes from Daugavpils University aged 20-36 years.Students (n = 191, 123 females and 68 males, mean age 24.02 ± 0.24 years) underwent measurement of anthropometric values (height, weight), physical (PWC170 index) and aero… Show more

“…This is evident from the change in the values of scapular index which is the distance between acromion process to the lying surface. The values were reduced significantly in subjects with forward shoulder and resulted in improving the alignment of shoulder [19]. When FSP is maintained for prolonged periods, it causes the shortening of the anterior shoulder girdle muscles and places humerus in internal rotation.…”

“…Mean difference between pre-test and post-test values were 0.7(cm) for scapular index right, 0.68(cm) for scapular index left, 0.59(cm) for upper chest expansion, 1.21(secs) for inspiratory hold time using incentive spirometry and 6.79(m) for aerobic capacity When the pre and post means were compared using paired t test, statistically significant difference was proved for all the outcome measures. (Table 2 induces alteration in breathing mechanics [19]. This contributes to reduction in lung volumes and capacities and limits the ability to maximise the lung capacity.…”

“…The organs that play the most role are the heart and lungs where the heart will beat rapidly with an increased respiratory rate accompanied by rapid work by the lungs (Mihailova & Kaminska, 2016).…”

“…They considered different breathing parameters including tidal volume, breathing rate, minute ventilation, and duration of inspiration and expiration. Mihailova and Kaminski [5] examined the relation between body mass index, amount of physical activity, aerobic fitness and breathing parameters in students. Johnson [6] summarized the cardiorespiratory responses to different levels of exercise including walking, jogging and running for a normal young male.…”
