Lung cancer prognosis in Spain: The role of histology, age and sex

Abstract: Survival in the case of lung cancer patients not only remains poor and decreases with advancing age at diagnosis, but recent European studies also report that it differs by sex. Our study sought to describe sex-related differences in lung cancer survival in Spain, and evaluate the role played by histologic type. Our analysis covered seven Spanish regions with population-based cancer registries. Cases diagnosed with lung cancer during the period 1995e1999 were followed up until December 31, 2004. “…1 In Spain, as in the rest of the developed world, certain changes are taking place, such as a greater incidence of LC in women, though the poor prognosis remains. 2 Among HIV-infected persons, LC is the third most common malignancy, preceded only by Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. [3][4][5][6] Moreover, epidemiologic data suggest that the risk of LC is two to four times greater in HIV-infected persons than in the general population, even after adjusting for other factors such as smoking intensity and duration.…”

“…[17][18][19][20] The current male-to-female ratio in the USA is close to one. [21,22] Our ratio of males to females with lung cancer is still high, [23][24][25] similar to other spainish rural areas. In any case, the male-to-female ratio is still substantially higher in Spain (8.5 in 2003) [26,27] than in other Western countries, where it varies between 1.3 and 4.5 likely due to the much more rare habit of smoking in women than in men.…”
