Lung cancer in a defined geographical area: history and histological types.

Abstract: Lung cancer was diagnosed in 446 patients during four years in a population living in a defined geographical area in northern Finland. The series comprised 420 men and 26 women, with a male/female ratio of 16-6:1. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically or cytologically in 431 cases (97 %). Epidermoid carcinoma was the most common histological type of tumour in the men, followed by small cell anaplastic and adenocarcinoma, whereas in the women all these types were of equal frequency. Almost all the men, but… Show more

“…Huhti ve arkadaşları, 20 yıllık bir süreçte akciğer kanserli kadın hasta oranının % 6'dan % 15'e yükseldiğini saptamışlardır [7,18]. Sağlık Bakanlığı verilerine göre, 1999 yılında akciğer kanseri insidansı erkeklerde 7.8/100.000, kadınlarda 1.2/100.000'dir [5].…”

“…Two studies reported pain prevalence by underlying histological subtype: Hopwood et al found that 50% of patients with SCLC and 65% of patients with NSCLC had pain [20], whereas in Huhti et al's study these values were 40 and 26%, respectively [21]. Chute et al did not find any relationship between presence of pain and underlying histological subtype [22].…”

“…Of the three studies that assessed the influence of gender on pain, none found a relationship [21,28,29], although Huhti et al found in one small sample (n = 26) that women with pain were more likely to have had it as a long standing problem (defined as more than 6 months duration) than men (P = 0.05) [21].…”

“…[7], [8] How these cases currently come to medical attention and are diagnosed is not known, as most studies describing the presentation of lung cancer were performed 25–45 years ago, a time when almost all cases were detected by CXR ordered to evaluate cardiopulmonary symptoms. [9]–[14] We therefore evaluated the presentation of early-stage lung cancer in a contemporary population, with particular focus on the type and reason for initial imaging studies. Of these cases, we determined which would have been eligible for the NLST.…”
