Zinc tellurite glasses of compositions 19ZnO-80TeO 2 -1Ln 2 O 3 with Ln= Eu, Er, Nd and Tm were prepared by melt quenching. The absorption spectra were measured and from the experimental oscillator strengths of the f f transitions the Judd-Ofelt parameters V u were obtained. The values of the V u parameters are in the range usually observed for oxide glasses. For Nd 3 + and Er 3 + , luminescence spectra in the near infrared were measured and the stimulated emission cross sections | p were evaluated for some laser transitions. The high values of | p , especially for Nd 3 + , make them possible candidates for optical applications. Fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) spectra of the Eu 3 + doped glass were measured at 20 K, and the energies of the Stark components of the 7 F 1 and 7 F 2 states were obtained. A crystal field analysis was carried out assuming a C 26 site symmetry. The behaviour of the crystal field ratios B 22 /B 20 and B 44 /B 40 agrees reasonably well with the values calculated using the geometric model proposed by Brecher and Riseberg. The crystal field strength at the Eu 3 + sites appears to be very low compared to other oxide glasses.

We investigated the room temperature photoluminescence of calcium thiogallate codoped with Ce and Pr.\ud Line shaped emissions superimposed over a wide and composed luminescence band were observed. Different\ud components were distinguished by means of time resolved photoluminescence measurements, and\ud were attributed to the dopant species. Growth of Oxide Laser Crystals by Czochralski Method

The growth of series of actual laser crystals belonging to dierent structural types by the Czochralski method is presented. The primary attention is given to single crystalline compounds and their solid solutions with garnet structure (scandium-containing rare-earth garnets with general formula {LnSc}3[ScMe]2Me3O12, Me = Al, Ga) as well as with olivine (forsterite Mg2SiO4) and scheelite structure (double tungstates and molybdates with formula NaLn(TO4)2, where T = Mo or W). The broad bands of luminescence and absorption produced by activator ions in these laser hosts that appear either as a result of structural disorder (garnets, scheelites) or due to the doping by transition metal ions (chromium in forsterite) join together these representatives of dierent structural classes and determine their application in photonics. The paper considers the problems of growing of large crystals with uniform distribution of components and dopants, determination of congruently melting composition, especially in compounds with complex isomorphism. The mutual inuence of components and dopants, redistribution of ions along crystallographically non-equivalent sites in the structure, alteration of valency of transition metal ions accompanied with the change of their segregation coecients under variation of redox conditions is discussed.
