Luminescence and Scintillation Properties of Eu-doped CaAl2O4 Bulk Crystals

Abstract: Eu-doped CaAl 2 O 4 bulk crystals were synthesized by the floating zone (FZ) method, and their photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties were investigated firstly in a bulk crystal. The crystal samples exhibit PL and radioluminescence (RL) with a broad emission peaking around 440 nm as well as sharp peaks appearing around 600 nm, which are similarly observed for powder samples. Suggested from the decay time constants, they are attributed to the 5d-4f transitions of Eu 2+ and the 4f-4f transitions of … Show more

“…Light yields were evaluated using our original setup. (35) The light yield is an important parameter that determines the efficiency of the scintillating material in actual device applications. The glass samples were excited with α-rays from a 241 Am source to obtain pulse height spectra.…”

“…(16)(17)(18) Previously, we introduced the optical floating zone (FZ) method as an effective and powerful technique for searching new oxide scintillators with high melting points. (19)(20)(21)(22)(23) Up to now, pyrochlore RE 2 Hf 2 O 7 (RE = La, Gd, Lu) single crystals have been prepared using an optical FZ furnace equipped with Xe lamps, and the scintillation properties of these single crystals were reported for the first time by Nakauchi et al (18) To improve scintillation characteristics by increasing oxygen vacancies, Zr and Ti ions with radii smaller than that of the Hf ion are introduced into RE 2 Hf 2 O 7 single crystals to distort the crystal lattice because Hf-based oxide materials typically show luminescence due to oxygen vacancies such as F and F + centers. (24,25) Such investigations have been performed for several scintillator candidates showing intrinsic luminescence, and activation has been achieved in intrinsic scintillators.…”

“…Moreover, scintillation detectors have been used in many scientific areas, such as X-ray scanners for a security system, (5) environmental radiation monitoring, (6) positron emission tomography in medical diagnosis, (7) natural resource exploration, (8) and a specific sensor for high-energy physics research. (9) The selection of materials for solid-state scintillators is very wide, from single crystals, (10) transparent ceramics, (11) organics, (12) and hybrid compounds (13) to glass. (14) Although we have a wide freedom to select materials, candidate materials must have a large volume (bulk form) and a high transparency.…”
