Lumbar Puncture : Indications, Complications, Technique and CSF Analysis in Pediatric Patients

Abstract: Introduction: The subarachnoid space is filled with cerebrospinal fluid, which circulates through the entire central nervous system aiding in providing nutrition, fighting microbes, and acts as a buffer. Additionally, the cerebrospinal fluid also helps in diagnosis of various pathologies affecting the central nervous system ranging from infection, trauma, and tumor in the pediatric population with the help of lumbar puncture. Methodology: We conducted this review using a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PubMed… Show more

“…The interviews were performed after the examination of the children and lasted for approximately 10 minutes. Questions were read out to the participant from an anonymous questionnaire adapted from previous studies [3][4][5] and recorded the participant's responses on a questionnaire form. The participants were asked open-ended, yes/no, and multiple-choice questions about sociodemographic data; children's previous history as to whether LP had been performed previously; and parental beliefs.…”

“…1,2 Delays in the administration of antibiotics can increase morbidity and mortality in patients with bacterial meningitis or herpes encephalitis. 3 When concerned about infection, risks of not performing an LP are higher than those associated with the procedure. 3 Lumbar puncture is fundamental for diagnosis and treatment; however, some parents do not provide consent for their children to undergo the procedure, which can make diagnosis and determination of the optimal treatment difficult.…”

“…Lumbar puncture (LP) is one of the methods in Neurology that is quite often performed for various purposes, one of which is for taking Liquor Cerebrospinal (LCS). 1 Lumbar puncture is useful as a diagnostic and therapeutic method in diseases involving the central nervous system. Lumbar puncture procedures include subarachnoid space pricking through the L3-L4 or L4-L5 intervertebral.…”

“…It was first introduced by Heinrich Quincke in 1891 to relieve elevated intracranial pressure in cases of meningitis. (1)LP is often performed to examine the CSF in infectious and non-infectious disorders of CNS like blood dyscrasias (leukemia and lymphoma), hemorrhage, some metabolic disorders and to measure CSF pressure if there is clinical suspicion of intracranial hypertension and (2,3,4)The procedure is commonly done for two purposes: Diagnostic and therapeutic, for example to administer intrathecal chemotherapy, and therefore encountered often in emergency, neurology and oncology wards. (3)Despite being a comparatively invasive procedure, it can cause some inconsequential complications, like headache, low back pain, radicular pain or numbness and bleeding.…”
