Novelties in Lippia (Verbenaceae) from Minas Gerais State, Brazil

Abstract: We describe Lippia krenakiana, a new species of Verbenaceae endemic to the campos rupestres of Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species is mainly distinguished by the combination of ovate-deltoid leaf blades and sericeous-villous indument with sessile and pedicellate glandular trichomes. We provide a diagnosis, a morphological comparison with the most similar species, a distribution map, preliminary conservation assessment, and photos of live specimens. Additional notes on Lippia are also provided,… Show more

“…Recently, three new species of Verbenaceae, namely Lippia krenakiana P.H.Cardoso, V.I.R. Valério and Salimena, L. raoniana P.H.Cardoso and Salimena and Stachytarpheta vianae P.H.Cardoso, were described from the Diamantina Plateau (Cardoso et al 2020a, b2020b, 2021a, b2021b, 2022). The discovery of S. meninii further emphasizes the high biological importance of this region, known for its exceptional plant diversity and endemism, despite having few legally protected areas (Echternacht et al 2011).…”

“…Since the 19th century, with particular emphasis on the ‘Flora brasiliensis' (Martius 1840–1840), significant taxonomic efforts have been made to describe, document, and update information regarding the diversity and distribution of the Brazilian flora, with many new species yet to be discovered (BFG 2022). Verbenaceae is no exception, with several new species described in the last five years (Cardoso et al 2019, 2020a,b2020b, 2021a, b2021b, 2022, 2023a, b2023b, Harley et al 2019, Thode and Bordignon 2019), most of which belonging to Lippia L. and Stachytarpheta Vahl, the two largest genera of the family, respectively (Cardoso et al 2021c).…”

“…The highest species richness in Lippia is concentrated in Brazil, with ca 90 species Cardoso et al 2019bCardoso et al , 2019cCardoso et al , 2020b. The majority of these occur in the Espinhaço Range , which extends for over 1000 km, north to south, from the State of Bahia to the State of Minas Gerais.…”
