Together with Western Ghats, Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot amongst the 35 regions known worldwide. Considering the Sri Lankan orchids, 70.6% of the orchid species, including 84% of the endemics, are categorised as threatened. The distribution of the family Orchidaceae is mostly correlated with the distribution pattern of the main bioclimatic zones which is governed by the amount and intensity of rainfall and altitude. Habitat deterioration and degradation, clearing of vegetation, intentional forest fires and spread of invasive alien species are significant threats to native species. Illegally collection and exporting of indigenous species has been another alarming issue in the past decades. Protection of native species, increased public awareness, enforcement of legislation and introduction of new propagation techniques would certainly bring a beneficial effect to the native orchid flora. Conduct awareness programs, strengthen existing laws, and reviewing the legal framework related to the native orchid flora could be vital for future conservation. Apart from the identification of new species and their distribution, future research on understanding soil chemical and physical parameters of terrestrial habitats, plant association of terrestrial orchids, phenology patterns and interactions of pollinators, associations with mycorrhiza, effect of invasive alien species and impact of climate change are highlighted.

The botanical names of many species carry etymological information such as morphological characteristics, habitats, and ecological features, distributional range, etc. Some species contain the name of local people, type locality, and vernacular names as generic names and specific epithets. Sri Lanka has an interesting history of botanical exploration and nomenclature. Hence, the country's name has been often used in the naming of plant species, particularly during the colonial era. Apart from that, a considerable number of species have also been named often after the local people. Moreover, type locality and vernacular names have also been considered in the naming of plant species. The aim of this publication was to compile such plant species with their etymological information and to understand how Sri Lanka and Sinhala language have contributed to the field of botanical nomenclature. Out of all native plant species (Angiosperms: 3,087 + Pteridophytes: 350), 223 taxa carry the country's name, names of local people, type locality, and vernacular names as specific epithets. The naming of 162 plant species by country's name is a significant contribution to the field of botanical nomenclature. Since similar assessment has not been carried out in other countries, the values cannot be compared.

This paper presents a re-evaluation of the taxonomic identity of Gastrodia foetida based on molecular and morphological data. The taxon was described from Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and has often been treated as a synonym of G. nipponica from Wakayama Prefecture, Honshu, Japan. In contrast, we showed that the genetic divergence between G. foetida and G. nipponica is much more significant than that between G. foetida and G. takeshimensis. Additionally, G. foetida can be distinguished from G. nipponica by a few morphological traits, particularly a more dilated column toward a little below the middle. Therefore, we propose that G. foetida is recognized as a distinct species based primarily on molecular phylogenetic evidence followed by morphological evidence. Our investigation strongly suggested that these species exhibit distinct geographic separation: G. nipponica is restricted in mainland Japan (north of the Ryukyu Islands), whereas G. foetida is mainly distributed on the more southern areas (the Ryukyu Islands and possibly Taiwan).
