Bryophytes from some Caatinga areas in the state of Bahia (Brazil)

Abstract: Abstract:The caatinga is a deciduous and xerophilous vegetation that covers large areas in Brazil. An irregular rainfall with a marked dry period is a characteristic feature. This paper represents the first contribution to the knowledge of the bryoflora from caatinga vegetation in the State of Bahia. The survey was carried out in several areas from Bahia in which eigthteen species of bryophytes were found (15 mosses and 3 liverworts). The bryoflora from caatinga is composed mainly of generalists and xerophilou… Show more

“…The annual species compensate for this water loss by producing a large number of spores and using their ornamentation to attract animals for their dispersion (Glime 2007;Vanderpoorten & Goffinet 2009). As in the present study, other floristic studies of bryophytes in the caatinga (Pôrto et al 1994;Bastos et al 1998b) have shown low species richness, with representative species typically being tolerant of exposure to intense light and heat, such as those of the families Pottiaceae and Ricciaceae. A little over one third of the species recorded in the present study were also included in the flora listed in the literature cited above.…”

“…In the campos rupestres, bryophytes have been studied in the state of Minas Gerais-in the Serra do Cipó (Yano 1987), Serra da Piedade (Yano & Carvalho 1995) and Grão Mogol (Yano & Peralta 2009)-and in the state of Bahia, specifically within the Chapada Diamantina ecoregion (Harley 1995;Bastos et al 1998aBastos et al , 2000. Studies of bryophytes in the caatinga have been conducted in the states of Pernambuco (Pôrto et al 1994) and Bahia (Bastos et al 1998b).…”

“…Data on the bryophyte fl ora of rupestrian grasslands (campos rupestres) of Chapada Diamantina were provided by Bastos et al (2000), for various areas of Chapada Diamantina by Valente et al (2011) and for the Caatinga by Bastos et al (1998b). Specific floristic data on liverworts were provided by for the Michelin Ecological Reserve, by Valente & Pôrto (2006b) for Serra da Jibóia.…”
