Human Amniotic Membrane Plug for Macular Holes Coexisting with Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of human amniotic membrane in promoting closure of macular holes coexisting with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Methods: This is a retrospective case series of 14 eyes (14 patients) with macula off retinal detachment. These patients had a macular hole coexistent with peripheral retinal breaks. A human amniotic membrane plug was used to close the macular hole during vitrectomy without ILM peeling. Results: The mean preoperative BCVA (logMAR value) was 1.87 ± 0.31. At the 6-… Show more

“…They extended their indications to include MH-associated RRD (Caporossi et al 2019) and HM eyes (Caporossi et al 2020a;Caporossi et al 2020b) with encouraging anatomic and functional results. Unstained cAM inlays were subsequently used successfully in small series (Abouhussein et al 2020;Yadav et al 2020) but comparability is restricted by heterogeneous baseline characteristics and follow-up. At the same time, Florent et al 2020 reported the first case of an lAM inlay, with only a 1-month follow-up showing MH closure and BCVA improvement.…”

“…Different techniques using cryopreserved AM (cAM), a widely available tissue, have provided results either used first as a plug transplanted into the subretinal space [2][3][4][5][6] or placed secondly in an epiretinal position [7]. Rizzo et al [2][3][4] used cAM from a local eye bank (Lucca, Italy) and positioned the plug with ''chorion down'', facing the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) (i.e., as an inlay [8]).…”

“…Rizzo et al [2][3][4] used cAM from a local eye bank (Lucca, Italy) and positioned the plug with ''chorion down'', facing the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) (i.e., as an inlay [8]). Abouhussein et al [5] used homemade cAM and Huang et al [6] used cAM from AmnioGraft (Bio-Tissue, Miami, FL, USA) transplanted as inlay. This chorion-down orientation of the plug of cAM subretinally transplanted may ensure proper adhesion on the RPE, preventing secondary displacement.…”
