Alteration of Clinical Chemistry Parameters Among Visceral Leishmaniasis Patients in Western Tigrai, Ethiopia, 2018/2019: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Background: Visceral leishmaniasis causes alterations of lipid metabolism and it is associated with hypocholesterolemia and severe hypertriglyceridemia. Hepatic dysfunction and life-threatening hepatitis are associated with visceral leishmaniasis. Kidney damage is frequently associated with increased morbidity and mortality in visceral leishmaniasis patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the alterations of clinical chemistry parameters among visceral leishmaniasis patients attendi… Show more

“…Our result is in agreement with a study conducted by Tesfanchal et al [14] who revealed an average serum AST, ALA, ALP, total bilirubin, and triglyceride levels were markedly larger in visceral leishmaniasis patients than in apparently control subjects. A consensus was reached concerning hematological characteristics retrieved from the laboratory records before and after the intervention.…”

“…It also has an influence on the renal, which is linked to high morbidity and mortality. Acute kidney injury may lead to renal dysfunction that occurs as a consequence of the deposition of immune complexes leading to the damage of the glomerulus [14][15][16]. Increasing disease activity has also been noted in the eastern state of Al-Qadarif, where an increased rate of death despite treatment protocol implemented within years, patients suffer from intensified symptoms even during the treatment course, giving a query about the effectiveness of drugs used over there.…”

“…In fact, there is a decrease in the serum albumin level, in contrast to an expressive increase in the globulin levels, causing a significant increase in the levels of total plasmatic proteins during canine leishmaniasis [43,48]. Liver function may also be normal or with changes suggestive of liver diseases [49]. It can be detected by increased activity of liver enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase (AP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) [49][50][51].…”
