Glossifungites Ichnofabric Signifying Crustacean Colonization in Early Permian Barakar Formation, Talchir Coal Basin, India

Abstract: Early Permian Barakar Formation (Gondwana Supergroup) in peninsular India was earlier interpreted as deposited in braided-meandering fluvial system. Intense burrowing by decapod crustaceans of marginal marine affinity led to Thalassinoides-Ophiomorpha-Rhizocorallium ichnoassemblage, belonging to Glossifungites ichnofacies, within the sandstone-mudstone heterolithic facies near the upper part of the Barakar sedimentary succession, Gouduni River, Talchir coal basin, Odisha, India. An early cementation of the san… Show more

“…It mainly characterizes the Glossifungites and Cruziana ichnofacies in firm and soft grounds (Knaust 2017(Knaust , 2021b. The Cruziana ichnofacies is typical of shallow-marine environments, but occurs in a wide range of settings, including lagoons, bays, estuaries, and tidal flats (MacEachern et al 2007;Bhattacharya et al 2016;Pemberton et al 2012;MacEachern and Bann 2020).…”

“…There are several concepts regarding the depositional setting of the Barakar Formation, Raniganjbasin, India, from formerly interpreted as fluvio-lacustrine depositional setting [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]to recently reinterpreted fluvio-tide-wave dominated depositional model [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The sedimentary rocks of Barakar Formation from other basins of India hosts evidences of trace fossils [30][31][32][33].…”

“…within this basin. There are several concepts regarding the depositional setting of the studied basin like formerly interpreted fluvio-lacustrine depositional model [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]to recently reinterpreted fluvio-tide-wave dominated depositional model [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The lower Barakar is characterized by alternate sandstone-shale-coal with finer clastics predominates in the upper part of the Barakar Formation [27,28].…”
