<b>Improvement of production and fruit quality of pitayas with potassium fertilization

Abstract: Pitaya is a fruit that is becoming promising for cultivation around the world due to the quality of its fruits in terms of taste and their peculiar external shape. Because it is a recenttly cultivated crop, information about fertilization is essential to enable its production. In this sense, this study was performed aiming to evaluate different doses of K 2 O for pitaya cultivation. Hylocereus undatus and Hylocereus polyrhizus were studied under field conditions. Pitayas were cultivated at a 3 × 3m spacing, an… Show more

“…According to Sarment et al (2008), when N supply is performed under conditions of low K availability, there is a low efficiency of N use by the plant. Almeida et al (2016), when evaluating the nutritional status of pitaya plants submitted to different doses of N and K, observed the high demand of this species by K, demanding around twice more K than N. Fernandes et al (2018) verified the importance of K also on the increase of production and quality of pitaya fruits.…”

“…Plants properly fertilized with K produce pitayas with a better appearance and flavor, and higher productivity (Fernandes et al, 2018). Therefore, it is fundamental to identify the amount of nutrients exported by the fruit to support fertilization, aiming to replace mineral nutrients in the soil to increase the area under cultivation and increase the productivity of commercial-quality pitaya.…”

“…Due to the lack of this information, specifically in Brazil, management has been carried out differently wherever this species is cultivated, resulting in varying levels of productivity, entre 2 to 9 tons per hectare (Moreira et al, 2012;Fernandes et al, 2018). However, mineral fertilization is critical, especially when the annual yields of pitaya orchards are high (between 20 to 45 tons per hectare).…”
