Lower Oesophagus Lined with Intestinal and Gastric Epithelia

Abstract: The patient first had symptoms at the age of 14 years when he began to suffer from heartburn. This came on when he was lying down and was relieved when he sat up. Indigestion was also caused by eating pickles. The symptoms recurred intermittently and gradually grew worse. “…In the past, it was argued that Barrett's esophagus is a congenital condition caused by abnormal embryologic development with incomplete squamous re-epithelialization of the columnar-lined fetal esophagus [8]. However, embryonic columnar mucosa in the esophagus is ciliated, it does not contain glandular tissue, and it does not resemble any of the three types of columnar mucosa that comprise Barrett's esophagus.…”

“…They reported that esophageal peristaltic waves passed from the normal esophageal squamous epithelium to the metaplastic columnar segment without interruption, confirming that this was not stomach. These correlations were not performed or suggested by Barrett. Despite the few earlier reports and observations, which described intestinal metaplasia in CLE, it was Abrams and Heath 80 who first suggested in 1965 that the esophagus could be lined with an intestinal type of epithelium. In 1970, Trier 81 was the first to fully describe this type of epithelium.…”
