Low-Toxic, Earth-Abundant Nanostructured Materials for Thermoelectric Applications

Abstract: This article presents recent research directions in the study of Earth-abundant, cost-effective, and low-toxic advanced nanostructured materials for thermoelectric generator (TEG) applications. This study’s critical aspect is to systematically evaluate the development of high-performance nanostructured thermoelectric (TE) materials from sustainable sources, which are expected to have a meaningful and enduring impact in developing a cost-effective TE system. We review both the performance and limitation aspects… Show more

“…At present, much attention is paid to the development and study of new highly efficient thermoelectric materials in the scientific world, which can be judged by the greatly increased number of publications in this field in the past decade. Modern strategies for the search and synthesis of promising thermoelectrics are based on the quantum theory of solids and the latest advances in nanotechnology [ 3 , 4 , 82 , 83 ]. Depending on the group of materials (film, bulk, superlattice, supramolecular, etc.)…”

“…One of the directions in the search for highly efficient thermoelectric materials remains skutterudites [ 83 ]. Skutterudites are a kind of cobalt arsenide minerals consisting of variable traces of iron or nickel substituting for cobalt to formulate CoAs 3 .…”

“…The fabrication methods suitable for large-scale production need to be explored thoroughly in all the concerned aspects. In our previous paper [ 7 ], we have dealt with identifying low-toxic and earth-abundant nanostructured materials in different operating temperatures. Yet, these materials are behind conventional materials and require further enhancement for successful embedment.…”
