Low Survival Rates of Oral and Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Aim To assess the epidemiological and clinical factors that influence the prognosis of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods One hundred and twenty-one cases of oral and oropharyngeal SCC were selected. The survival curves for each variable were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox regression model was applied to assess the effect of the variables on survival. Results Cancers at an advanced stage were observed in 103 patients (85.1%). Cancers on the tongue were more frequent… Show more

“…In Brazil, Santa Catarina reported a 5-year OS for OC and pharyngeal cancer of 33.3% (12). In Maceio, northeast of Brazil, the 5-year OS for oropharyngeal cancer was 27.8% (12,13). In Santa Maria, south of Brazil, the 5-year OS for OC and oropharyngeal cancer was 42%; however, patients with oropharyngeal cancer had the worst survival rates (14).…”

“…2 Despite an improvement of treatment modalities, the overall 5-year survival rate for OSCC is about 50%. 3 One of the most used means to predict the tumor behavior is the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system. Anyway, patients classified under the same TNM stage undergo the same treatment but show differences prognosis.…”

“…Local recurrence and metastasis occur frequently in OSCC in spite of the significant advancement in diagnosis and treatment approach, leading to unsatisfactory survival and poor prognosis [23]. Thus, new treatment modalities and sensitive molecular biomarkers are required that can lower OSCC mortality.…”
