Low Physical Activity and Its Association with Diabetes and Other Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A Nationwide, Population-Based Study

Abstract: Low physical activity (PA), or sedentary lifestyle, is associated with the development of several chronic diseases. We aimed to investigate current prevalence of sedentariness and its association with diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors. PA was evaluated in a population-based, cross-sectional, randomly sampled study conducted in 2009–2010 in Spain. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (SF-IPAQ) was used to assess PA. 4991 individuals (median age 50 years, 57% women) were studied. Prevalence… Show more

“…IPAQ is used in many recent studies to measure physical activity level of post-menopausal women [21] breast cancer patients (Canário, et al,1992), cardiovascular disease patients [22] and diabetes [23,24]. Turkish versions of the IPAQ short and long forms are found reliable and valid in assessment of physical activity [5].…”

“…Subsequently, obesity, and particularly central adiposity, is common among persons with chronic SCI and is more prevalent than in able-bodied persons [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. The sedentary lifestyle can also result in low levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), an additional CHD risk factor [23,24].…”

“…1 Low physical activity (PA) is among the leading causes of the major noncommunicable diseases, including diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). [2][3] An increased prevalence rate of FM in DM2 patients was revealed. [4][5] Risk of the development of DM2 in FM is unknown.…”

“…Several studies highlight the importance of central sensitisation (CS) as a significant manifestation of neuropathic pain symptoms in knee osteoarthritis (OA). [2][3] Possible similar mechanisms of chronic pain maintenance in OAstructural pathology, and FMcentral sensitivity syndrome, provoke further interest in investigation of any links between these conditions. Therefore, prevalence of FM in patients with painful knee OA is of considerable interest.…”
