| G5 and G8 are two sorghum mutant lines projected as special sorghum varieties for forage in Indonesia. The objective of this research was to investigate the nutrient profile and in vitro gas production characteristics from two sorghum mutant lines as forage for ruminants. The two mutant lines were compared with Numbu and Pahat variety. Nutients and in vitro digestibility studies were also investigated at different generative phase. This research was arranged into a randomized block design with two factors. The first factor was the variety/mutant lines of sorghum. The second factor was the generative phase (flowering, soft dough and hard dough). Variables measured were nutrients profile, in vitro gas production and rumen fermentation products. Results showed that G5 at hard dough phase produced the highest stem sugar content (P<0.01). The highest potential in vitro gas production (a+b) was found at G5 mutant lines at hard dough stage (P<0.01). Pahat and G5 at hard dough phase had the highest in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) with 54.48 and 54.61% repectively. The highest total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) was found at G5 and G8 mutant lines at hard dough stage (P<0.01). Meanwhile, the best CO 2 :CH 4 ratio was produced by Pahat, G5 and G8 (P<0.01). Based on those findings, it can be concluded that G5 mutant lines had higher quality of nutrients profile, potential in vitro gas production and IVTD. Increasing generative phase also could increase in vitro digestibility for all varieties/ mutant lines.

Tanaman sorgum yang dibudidayakan secara hidroponik dapat disebut dengan sorghum green fodder (SGF). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan evaluasi performa pertumbuhan, profil nutrisi dan kecernaan in vitro tanaman sorgum hasil budidaya hidroponik yang dipanen pada umur yang berbeda. Perlakuan penelitian meliputi SGF yang dipanen pada hari ke 7, 8, 9 dan 10. Pada pengamatan kecernaan in vitro, keempat perlakuan SGF dibandingkan dengan rumput lapangan. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap dengan empat pengulangan. Parameter yang diamati adalah performa pertumbuhan, profil nutrisi, produksi gas dan produk fermentasi rumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa SGF 10 menghasilkan tinggi tanaman dan berat segar tertinggi (P<0,05) namun tidak berbeda nyata dengan SGF 9. Kandungan protein kasar SGF lebih tinggi dibandingkan rumput lapangan (P<0,05). SGF menghasilkan produksi gas total yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan rumput lapangan (P<0,05). Akan tetapi, SGF 10 menghasilkan produksi CH4 yang tinggi. Nilai energi termetabolis (EM) dan kecernaan bahan organik (KcBO) keempat perlakuan SGF terlihat lebih tinggi dibandingkan rumput lapangan (P<0,05). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah pola pertumbuhan, profil nutrisi dan kecernaan in vitro SGF semakin meningkat seiiring dengan meningkatnya umur pemanenan. Umur panen SGF yang terbaik adalah pada hari ke-9.

Gamma Radiation Effects on Dwarf Napier Grass Quality in Acidic Soil: A Study of Minerals and Rumen Fluids

This study investigated the potential of gamma radiation to enhance the quality of dwarf napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mot) cultivated in acidic soil, with a focus on its macro-mineral content and rumen fluid characteristics. The research findings focus on the impact of gamma radiation solely on macro minerals and rumen fluids, enhancing our insights into innovative approaches for improving livestock nutrition in regions with prevalent acidic soils. The experiment involved the application of various gamma radiation doses (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 Gy). Four replications were done using a randomized block design, with 25 Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mot seeds in each repetition, totalling 700 seeds. The plants were grown in acidic soil with a pH of approximately 4.5-5. After two months of growth, the plants were harvested, and various parameters were analyzed. The results of the research indicated that the application of a 15 Gy dosage significantly enhanced the absorption of P (p<0.01), N (p<0.01), and Ca (p<0.01) in the plant. Additionally, gamma irradiation at a 25 Gy dosage demonstrated a notable effect, resulting in the highest calcium (Ca) content (p<0.01). However, the treatment did not exhibit a significant impact on pH (p > 0.05) in the rumen fluid, while NH3 (p<0.01) and VFA (p<0.01) parameters in the rumen fluid were significantly affected. The optimal dosage for the rumen fluid parameters NH3 and VFA was found to be 15 Gy. Overall, it can be concluded from this study that gamma irradiation doses of 15 Gy can enhance the nutritional content of Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mot cultivated on acidic soil, particularly when evaluated based on mineral content and rumen fluid parameters.
