Low intestinal colonization of Escherichia coli clone ST131 producing CTX-M-15 in Jordanian infants

Abstract: Over a period of 3 years' study (2012)(2013)(2014), a total of 518 faecal samples were collected and cultured to isolate Escherichia coli. Of these, 338 (65.3 %) E. coli isolates were recovered from infants, and 142/338 (42 %) were multidrug-resistant (MDR) to $3 drug classes using the antimicrobial susceptibility disc diffusion method. A total of 125/142 (88 %) of E. coli isolates were extended-spectrum b-lactamase (ESBL) producers. blaCTX-M-15 types were observed in 80/125 (64 %) of the isolates, and 60/80 (… Show more

“…Escherichia coli faecal strains (68 strains) were isolated from healthy infants (<1 year old). The isolates were collected, isolated and identified in a previous work (Badran et al 2016). In that work, the collection of the isolates was performed after obtaining the necessary ethical approval and consent forms (Badran et al 2016).…”

“…Class of CTX-M type enzymes are the most prevalent extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) worldwide including Arab Middle East countries [2,3]. Among the CTX-M type enzymes, CTX-M-15 has been frequently found in Arab countries over the last decade [3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…This new discovered ST131 clone has been recently isolated from a diverse range of infections caused in community and hospitalized patients across the world, and it has been found as ESBL CTX-M-15-producer with a high virulence potential. In addition, ST131 clone has been reported to cause major infection complications from cystitis to lifethreatening sepsis in many countries [4,[12][13][14]. Fluoroquinolones and trimethoprim are no longer effective for empiric therapy of E. coli ST131 infections [13][14][15][16].…”
