Low Expression of Junctional Adhesion Molecule A Is Associated with Metastasis and Poor Survival in Pancreatic Cancer

Abstract: These findings suggest for the first time that low levels of JAM-A expression in pancreatic cancer are associated with poor clinical outcome. JAM-A may represents a target molecule for functional inactivation and serve as a novel biomarker of adverse prognosis in pancreatic cancer.

“…Furthermore, it was reported that knock-down of JAM-A induced renal cancer cells migration [19]. These inconsistent results may suggest that aberrant expression of JAM-A in cancers may be involved in different signaling pathways, which lead to different effects of JAM-A on regulating cancer cells migration and invasion [7]. Therefore, further studies are needed to clarify the molecular mechanisms involved in the JAM-A-induced inhibition of gastric cancer cells migration and invasion in the future, which is helpful for further understanding the role of JAM-A in gastric cancer progression.…”

“…Antigen expression was defined as the presence of specific staining on surface membranes of tumor cells [7]. The evaluation was based on the staining intensity and extent of staining.…”

“…In breast cancer cells it was originally thought that attenuation of JAM-A either directly (25) or by upstream regulation of transforming growth factor-β1 expression (26) contributed to invasive potential. In pancreatic cancer low expression of JAM-A has been associated with metastasis and poor patient survival (27), while downregulation of JAM-A has also been linked with clear renal cell carcinoma (28). It will be interesting to determine in future studies whether JAM-A represents merely a biomarker in some cancers versus a viable therapeutic target in others.…”
