“…Moreover, local skin redox imbalance seems to precede immune infiltration in the skin where psoriatic plaque will form (Dimon‐Gadal et al, ). Our study, performed on primary fibroblasts obtained from lesional and nonlesional psoriatic skin showed a significant redox imbalance and NADPH oxidase up‐regulation in psoriatic versus healthy primary fibroblasts (Barygina, Becatti, Lotti, et al, ; Barygina Becatti, Mannucci, et al, ). Indeed, NADPH oxidase activity measured by luminometric assay in NADPH‐stimulates fibroblasts obtained from the lesional skin of psoriatic patients was significantly increased by 51.43 ±15% with respect to fibroblasts obtained from the skin of healthy individuals.…”

“…Moreover, SIRT1 upregulates a number of cellular antioxidant enzymes, including SOD1, catalase, glutathione peroxidase 1, and thioredoxin‐1 (Li, ). Finally, treatment with natural antioxidants significantly restores redox balance in psoriatic fibroblasts (Barygina, Becatti, Lotti, et al, ; Barygina Becatti, Mannucci, et al, ) and shows a positive effect in the treatment of psoriasis (Nardo et al, ). In conclusion, we speculate that, at least in part, the beneficial effects exerted by acitretin in the treatment of psoriasis are due to its antioxidant properties thus indirectly proving the benefit of antioxidants as a coadjutant treatment of psoriasis.…”

“…Such cytokines as IL-4, IL-10, and EGF administered at low doses have reduced the level of oxidative stress in psoriatic fibroblasts. However, the exact mechanism of this reaction is still being sought [ 4 ]. It is possible that the relationship between cytokines and ROS may be important in the pathogenesis of skin diseases, including Ps [ 2 ].…”

“…Going through the latest reports on the pathogenesis of Ps, it is highlighted that one of the risk factors of this dermatosis is oxidative stress (OS) [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. OS is caused by both increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)/reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and decreased concentration/activity of antioxidants that are responsible for their neutralization [ 4 ]. Although elevated ROS are signaling molecules to regulate biological and physiological processes, OS has been linked to a myriad of pathologies.…”
