Low-cost infrared thermography in aid of photovoltaic panels degradation research

Abstract: The analysis of PV solar panels deterioration allows researchers to know the health status of a panel in order to determine the overall functioning of a PV solar farm. A part of this analysis is performed by thermography, generally using professional and expensive equipment. This article presents a validation for the use of low-cost thermal imaging cameras, reviewing the relative error that can be obtained through scattering, contour analysis and three-dimensional meshes. The procedure is validated by analysis… Show more

“…Variable resistors capitalize on a varying resistance from zero (I SC ) to infinite (V OC ), enabling an approximate measurement around the MPP [74][75][76]. The method of using variable resistors is often simple to implement [71] but poses difficulties with accuracy, resolution, sweep speed, and scalability [70,77]. Capacitive loads serve as a more practical option for scalable rapid measurements [78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85].…”

“…In this way, the analysis of the module response curves gives us direct information on the electrical "state" of the module, allowing the researcher to obtain data on the expected performance of the module under different conditions of solar irradiation and module load. However, it is an analysis that must be supported by other deterioration detection techniques to be able to give a conclusive answer [9], because in normal operating conditions, PV modules can develop several failure modes at the same time, which implies that the response of the characteristic curves is an addition of all faults of the module.…”

“…This topology is used in [17][18][19][20], but it has limitations due to the quality of the curve obtained and the fact that the variation of resistance is normally done manually. In [9], the author states that the precision of the method is not high since it is susceptible to the fact that the solar radiation and the temperature vary while the test is carried out, and that the I-V curve does not have uniformity, and a high-power rheostat is not common in the market, making this method only applicable to low-power PV generators (<1 kW).…”

“…The operation and maintenance activities in photovoltaic (PV) plants can benefit from an accurate model of the expected PV plant's power or current efficiency. PV operators can identify underperformance due to failures or soiling with this efficiency model, proposing new techniques such as [1][2][3]. Even though a PV module datasheet provides information that can be used to get an idea of the electrical characteristics of a PV plant, that information has been obtained under laboratory conditions which, in several cases, are different from outdoor conditions.…”
